The best time to visit the Amazon: high water or low water
There is no single best month. The river rises and falls through the year, and that decides which side channels a boat can enter, how far a small boat can go into the forest and which routes a cruise keeps. Rain and heat are a second question, covered on the weather page.
Cruise programs are sold by season. Luxury programs in Peru define high water as December to May. That is a product definition, not a gauge calendar that fits every city. Pacaya-Samiria floods in the rainy months of October to April. If you are choosing between Amazon River cruises, ask which route your dates give you.

High water, low water and what changes
The same river gives you a different trip in each season.
High water
When the river is high, boats can use forest and side-channel routes that are closed at other times. That is why operators sell separate high-water programs. The gauge is a local reading at each town, so you cannot compare the number in Manaus with the number in Tabatinga or Itacoatiara.
Low water
The national geological survey of Brazil has low-water scenarios for 2026. For the Rio Negro at Manaus they show a gauge reading between 12.31 m and 16.50 m at the peak of the dry season. A gauge reading is not the depth of the river. These are scenarios, not a record that has happened.
Drought years
In 2023 an extreme drought and heat event hit Lago Tefé. A 2025 study counted 209 dead river dolphins, boto and tucuxi, with 70 on 28 September 2023 alone, and surface water of 39.5 °C that day. That was one lake in one year. It does not mean the whole river is closed in 2026.
River dolphins →Rain and heat
Manaus is wettest in March and April, with 320.9 and 331.0 mm, and warmest in September and October, with highs of 34.1 and 34.0 °C. Iquitos has rain in every month.
Weather by month →Our pick: a trip that depends on the water level

Best time to visit the Amazon by goal
What each month range offers. Seasons are not guarantees.
| Goal | When | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| A cruise on the high-water routes | December to May | A program definition, not a gauge calendar for every river |
| The Pacaya-Samiria reserve | Rainy months, October to April, when it floods | Flooding does not mean every sub-route can be used |
| Fewer rainy days in Manaus | July to September | August is the driest month at 56.1 mm. These are also the hottest months, up to 34.1 °C |
| The wettest stretch in Manaus | January to April | 297 to 331 mm a month |
| Iquitos | Any month | No dry month, at least 180 mm of rain every month |
| Fares on a Peru cruise | Any month | December counts as high season and October and November as low season, with the same fare |
For most first-time visitors who want to see the forest from a small boat in flooded channels, the December to May programs are the place to start. If you care most about fewer showers and can take the heat, look at July to September in Manaus. Either way, the route you get matters more than the month on the calendar.
What to confirm before you book
Water level can change a trip. Ask before you pay.
Port and route
Ask where the ship leaves from, which route is guaranteed and what happens if the water is too low or too high. Operators reserve the right to change routes because of weather and river conditions.
Small-boat excursions
Excursions by small boat depend on the water level. Ask which ones run on your dates and whether a different one replaces a cancelled trip.
Prices and seasons
Water level and price are separate. A luxury ship on 3 nights costs $3,860 to $4,020 per person on regular 2026 dates and $4,230 to $4,390 on holiday dates. The extra is for the holiday, not for the water.
Cruise routes and prices →Getting there
Flights, slow boats and ferries also depend on the season and the river. Check the current timetable before you go.

Best time to visit the Amazon: frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit the Amazon?
It depends on what you want. December to May suits the high-water cruise programs. July to September has the fewest rainy days in Manaus but the highest heat. Iquitos has rain in every month.
Is high water or low water better?
Neither is better in general. High water opens forest and side-channel routes, and low water changes which routes a cruise keeps. Ask your operator which route is guaranteed on your dates.
Does high water cost more?
Not by itself. On Peru ships the same fare applies in months labeled high and low season. A holiday supplement is a separate charge and is not tied to the water level.
Can a drought cancel a trip?
Low water can change routes, and operators reserve the right to change routes for river conditions. The 2023 drought hit Lago Tefé hard, but it does not mean the river is closed in 2026. Check before you book.
Does the gauge number show how deep the river is?
No. The Manaus figure is a reading at a local gauge, not the depth, and gauges in different towns cannot be compared with each other.
Is amazon-river.org an official tourism site?
No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to a cruise line, tourism board, park authority or tour operator.
